Technology meets Hobby and Health

Looking for a new hobby or enjoyable activity to take up? There are a lot of studies and articles that blame the Internet, video games and our ever faster growing instant gratification society for our lack of exercise and growing trend for obesity. However I am here to defend the Internet. I don’t believe it’s all bad, and in fact I believe that it’s possible you can learn, grow and gain enjoyment from the technology around us, if you know how to use it well.
Let’s say you want to starting kite surfing. Not every town has their own local kite surfing shop. It’s considerably a new and growing sport and there isn’t going to be experts you could learn and take lessons from in your town. With the web you could find stores, forums and blogs that talk about and sell the equipment you need for the sport. This is just one example of how you can connect with others and learn something new that you couldn’t do before in your area.
How about a topic or skill that is readily available in your area such as bass guitar lessons. How does the web affect your ability to learn to play bass guitar or any other instrument for that matter?
Well with the Internet you now have two choices. The first is you could take private lessons locally from a qualified instructor or you could opt to take bass lessons online via the web. Of course you could also use the Internet to find a qualified local teacher if you wanted as well.
Some of the best guitar lessons online are done by professional studio musicians, performers and university levels instructors. So it’s quite possible you could receive a far better quality of instruction taking the lessons on the web then you would taking them from someone in your home town.
Last but not least let’s say you want to take up a hobby that’s pretty basic. Maybe running or hiking, however you don’t have any one to keep you motivated or go for hikes and jogs with?
Again the social aspect of the web allows you to easily connect with others who enjoy the same things that you do and are in your local area. You could find a local running club or hiking club and meet all kinds of like minded individuals and have a ton of fun while you’re doing it.
