Here’s why many musicians favour the Zoom H4N over other portable digital recorders.

The H4N is a huge improvement on previous models. They brought the H4N out in response to all the flak they got about the previous Zoom H2. The earlier models had a weak, plastic build with serious noise issues.

The Zoom H4N, however, has a solid build with rubber coating which has resolved the sound problems. The screen and buttons are bigger and clearer making the H4N easier and more convenient to use. You get a great recording quality with the internal aluminium microphones as you can rotate the mics between 90 to 120 degrees giving you good coverage even a good 15 feet away from the music source.

The Pros of Zoom H4n

The Zoom H4N offers all the features that you get in other recorders for just half the price which makes it ideal.

Here is a look at some of the most impressive aspects of the H4n.

1) 4 track recording feature which is a gem in portable recording devices. This is made up of 2 built in stereo condenser mics plus 2 external mic inputs. This gives you greater control of the mixing as you can record a band plus a specific instrument.

2) Multitasking is another great feature and recording option. You can vary the volume and effects to a much greater degree as you have 4 distinct and separate tracks. This is a valuable feature if you are a musician as you can layer the compositions.

3) Zoom H4N also doubles up as an audio interface by plugging it into a computer with a USB cable.

4) The H4n works as a microphone and a headphone jack when connected to the computer. It can be used to make Skype calls or to record music or live audio feed with your laptop.

5) SD compatible memory card slot which is easy to use and cheaper than Sony memory sticks. Zoom H4n offers support for phantom power microphones plus you also get access to a low cut filter where you can choose from several frequencies.

When compared with some of its competitors, the sound quality offered by the H4n is very good. You can of course get better sound quality from some professional recording equipment. But, they cost a lot more, sometimes upto $200 more, and you only get a marginally better sound. The H4n is priced at $300 which is fantastic considering all the features that are packed into the piece.

With its price and features, the H4n is suitable for a wide group of users including audio recordists who are on the look out for a cheap device that can power condenser mics which require phantom power.

The Cons Of The Zoom H4n

A separate button for marking tracks could have been provided. This would make The Zoom H4N easier to use. It can be a cause for confusion as you have to press the record button twice to make the track markings.

The SD card slot also could have been better placed as there could be situations where you accidentally press the door that protects the SD card, ejecting the card and losing all the data in the process.

The file name characters can not be deleted with the H4N if you want to edit it. Also, the manual is a poor translation which could have been better revised and written.

Despite this, the Zoom H4N is one of the best value digital recorders on the market today. If you want to buy these portable digital recorders, I highly recommend you buy them through the Link below. You won’t find them cheaper anywhere else.
